TODAY'S FEATURED ARTIST

Both California grown, The Grouch & Eligh are no strangers to the underground rap movement, and came together after gracing the music scene since the 90s with groups like the Living Legends & 3 Meloncholy Gypsys. Their album 'Say G&E', released in April, is like 2009 Bone Thugs, but with the West Coast vibe layered in. Check the Skate Mobb playlist for a sample of The Grouch and Eligh's rhymes.

If you need some rock in your life, Crystal Antlers are the guys for you. Surprisingly, they started off as chimney sweeps in California to pay for their passion to create music. Proving they can handle the big leagues, Crystal Antlers went on a veggie-powered school bus tour playing and pleasing venues world-wide, including the legendary SXSW Fest in Austin, Tx. If you listen closely, you can hear similarities to greats of the 60s and 70s, like Steppenwolf, but they still manage to make it modern. Cruise over to the Skate Mobb playlist to get pumped.

THIS WEEK'S SLOCAL SKATER

Alex, a film making long-time skater, mobbed it over to the park with us for a sessh. A chill personality with a creative spirit, he spends some of his spare time making skate vids.

For a look @ Alex's video featuring some of our best SLO skaters Sean, Neal, and Mikey click HERE.

More about Alex in our Mobberview below...

Q: What are your fav. skate tricks?

A: Tre Flip, Back Lip, Back Feeble

Q: How long have you been skating?

A: I have been skating for 9 years...wow I should be pro by now.

Q: What was your first skate?

A: First skate was some element deck on venture trucks with spitfire wheels, I rode that until the tail was completely grinded away. There have been way too many boards to count since then.

Q: How'd you get into skating?

A: There was a skate park about a quarter mile from my house in Pleasanton so I guess I slowly got drawn to it.

Q: Had any nasty skate injuries?

A: A couple of badly rolled ankles and sprained wrists, but nothing serious. Skateboarding isn’t always nice and hurts my feelings every once and a while.

Q: Who's your fav. pro skater?

A: I don't really have a favorite skater. My favorite skater is my friend Mike V.

Q: What do you like to jam to?

A: I like hip-hop and rock and soul and funk and...anything besides country. Favorite artist? Maybe Biggie.

Q: How'd you get into film making?

A: I just got my own camera back in the fall so I have only been shooting my own skate footage for a little while. I have a lot of footage sitting around that I want to edit together, but I guess I haven't gotten around to it. I’ve been big on film since I was a kid but never really thought of it as a potential career path in high school so I came to Cal Poly instead of going to film school. After two years of Biomed Engineering, really shitty internships, and spending more time watching movies than doing homework, I realized that work is going to feel a lot like…work, if I am not doing something I love. So I decided to switch majors to film. Next fall I’m transferring to SF state, which I am really excited about. Go see my movies when I make it big!

Keep it locked on the Mobb Blog for more vids from Alex.

TODAY'S FEATURED ARTIST

If you haven't heard of her, Yelle, is mega-star in France who goes beyond using her imagination by writing songs about things like talking to a teenage transvestite on a fake phone. She is also an inspiration to the bright color, high-top wearing Tectonic dancers with raged out haircuts. According to Yelle, Tectonic is a mix of vogue and jump-style dancing that began in Belgium about 7 years ago, but really started busting out onto the scene within the last few months. You could say it's similar to breakdancing in the US, in that a lifestyle accompanies the dance.

The trend has spread like wildfire throughout Europe, so hop on the band wagon and check out Yelle's music video HERE for some tips, and the Skate Mobb playlist for her hits.

With a stage-wreckin' converse rockin' leading lady like Alice Glass and a master of production, Ethan Kath, the band Crystal Castles is taking the world by storm. Both from Canada, the duo blasted onto the scene in 2006, and released their first self-titled studio album in 2008. Squeezing in sounds from your Super Nintendo, tripped out vocals, and electronified samples, Crystal Castles takes the road less traveled. You've probably heard their single 'Crimewave' and if you like it, the rest of their songs are worth a listen. Cruise over to the Skate Mobb playlist to experience Crystal Castles.

HEADFIRST into the Spotlight

As Skate Mobb's first featured local skate-band, HeadFirst combines an old school feel with a fresh approach. After much deliberation, HeadFirst decided that they have been together for about 6 months. They play genres ranging from punk to reggae and do them all well. As of now, they have 7 original songs and one MisFits cover. Red Mobb (aka Evan) says that, "Every jam we've ever jammed has turned into a song", and if you listen to their tracks you can hear a complex mix of parts that show off each instrument and personality as if they were just rockin' out. Spencer, who Daniel coined as the 'band slut' for his band experience, plays the guitar, Red Mobb gets it done 'slappin' da bass', Daniel sings lead vocals & shreds on guitar, and Tyler's the one bangin' it out on the drums.

Click HERE to get an earful of HeadFirst & find out more in our exclusive Mobberview below.

Q: Who's the best skater in HeadFirst?

A: SPENCER: Best skater in the band? Not really sure, but I'm pretty sure I skate the most. I've never seen Tyler skate but I know he surfs a lot so he might rip, but in overall amount of time spent on a skateboard, that would probably be me.

RED MOBB: Spence is best. The rest of us are all tied for last place.

DANIEL: I am by far the worst. I'm guessing Spencer is the best.

TYLER: Spence is the best, Dan the worst.

Q: What skate do you have?

A: SPENCER: I ride a (I don't really know how to classify them, I always consider them the standard these days) street style board, street as in tricks, street tricks. Right now, I've got a One Way shop deck (7.75) with Indy's and Spitfire street burners (53mm).

RED MOBB: 30 year anniversary SantaCruz old school deck with big gummy rubbers.

DANIEL: I'm so bad I dont even know what type of skate I have.

TYLER: Old school Black Label.

Q: How does your skate fit your personality?

A: SPENCER: I guess my board fits my personality because it's adaptable. I've always ridden pretty much the same set up, more or less, since I was a kid. I can use it to go to a park or a spot, to play skate with my friends, or just to cruise around and get from place to place. I like to have freedom.

RED MOBB: I suppose I've just always been drawn to classic, steez, and OG shit.

DANIEL: It fits my personality in ways that are too deep to discuss.

TYLER: No comment.

Q: What bands/artists influence your music?

A: SPENCER: In terms of influences, I know we all sort of draw from different aspects. I'm personally influenced by older stuff like Jimi Hendrix, Zep, Sly Stone, Toots and the Maytals, Peter Tosh, The Misfits, MC5, The Meters...And newer stuff like The Rx Bandits, Dr. Dog, Radio Head.

RED MOBB: Rancind first and foremost, because Brett Reid is a savage on the bass. Victor Wooten too as far as bass playing goes. I know its standard as f***, but my biggest influence would have to be Sublime, just because before that I was 12 yrs. old and into strictly punk. Sublime opened my mind to reggae sounds like Peter Tosh and Toots, Steel Pulse, UB40, and others. Of course, Dan's brother's band (the Expendibles) is a big influence of mine as well. His bro wails on the bass.

DANIEL: Toots and the Maytals, Sublime, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley...so many artists influence me its hard to name them all.

TYLER: Way too many to name, everything from Toots & the Maytals to Alice in Chains.

Q: What instrument do you play in the band & for how long? Play any other instruments?

A: SPENCER: I play guitar, I used to play bass, and I can pretend to play drums. I started playing guitar about five years ago, but didn't really start practicing a lot until last year, and now I need to start practicing again.

RED MOBB: I started playing bass in 5th grade. My friends were starting a band and they needed a bass player, and basically just told me I was playing bass and so I picked it up. Random.

DANIEL: I play guitar and sing. I can play very simple drums and play bass like a four string guitar. I started playing guitar in 7th grade and I never really attempted to sing until freshman year of college. My vocals can always improve.

TYLER: I play drums. Started playing when I was about 15.

Q: What other bands have you been in?

A: SPENCER: Blame Huvane (6th grade), The Timebombs (8th grade), Ghost Cock (Cover Band), Combibo Abdera Canicula (Fake Band), Pig Lava (Cover Band).

RED MOBB: I was in various bands from 5th grade through high school. Little punk bands mainly. Copper Head, Sick Minded, Good for Nothing.

DANIEL: I've been in one other band in high school called Top Heavy.

TYLER: Top Heavy was the band I was in during high school.

Q: How'd you guys choose the name HeadFirst? How does it represent the band?

A: SPENCER: To be honest, Evan texted me "Head First"? And I said OK!. I guess you could say we dive into our music writing Head First, and just play until we have a song. Or that when we eat shit on our boards, we land head first. Or that we didn't have a band name and Evan came up with a cool one.

RED MOBB: Chose to leave it up to your imagination...

DANIEL: I presented Head First to Red Rob after I read it in a business book I was reading for school. The phrase stuck out. It reps the band because the general consensus is going in head first is core.

TYLER: No comment.

Stay tuned to the Mobb for info. on HeadFirst's upcoming gigs.

UCSB Extravaganza Recap

So, Skate Mobb made it down in time to catch Girl Talk and the ridiculous Ludacris. Both sets were better than you could imagine. The weirdest and lamest part tho, was the surprise guest. And if you jetted to the concert last night, you probably know exactly what we're talking about. Asher Roth, the self-proclaimed king of suburbia, wasn't given as much love as he'd hoped. Girl Talk, on the other hand, was a crowd-pleaser mixing his DJ skills with sick visuals on the monstrous Jumbo-tron to compliment the sounds. The highlight of the night, Luda, ended the show rapping his greatest and taking on Playaz Circle & Weezy Baby's "Duffle Bag Boy".
